This Structure is subject to change from year-to-year if the members of the USFL ownership do not like the way it is going. Previous league structures can be found below the Tie-breaker post found below.
Official League Structure for 2010-2011
3 divisions of 4 teams with 6 teams making the playoffs.
Walter Payton Division - Irish, Generals, Phish Brigade and Wildcats
Barry Sanders Division - Undertow, M357, Force and Outlaws
Jim Brown Division - Crush, Pimps, Swamp Dragons and Hellfire
Weeks 1-3 - Division Games Round 1 - 1 game against each division opponent
Weeks 4-10 - Out of Division Games - you will play all out of division opponents in the league except for 1. Which one is determined by further rules posted below.
Weeks 11-13 - Division Games Round 2 - 1 game against each division opponent in the same order as Division Games Round 1
Each Division Champion makes the playoffs as well as the three best overall league records other than Division Champions. Tie-breaker rules posted below are still applicable. The Division Champion with the worst record will play the Wild Card team with the worst record while the other two Wild Card teams will play each other and the other two Division Champions will have bye weeks. The overall league #1 seed will play the worst team surviving to the 2nd round and the other two teams will play in the other round 2 game. The winners advance and the winner of the 3rd round of playoff games is declared the USFL Champion for that year.
Determination of Skipped Team:
The divisions are ordered Payton, Sanders and Brown. There will be a rotating 2-year system based on the previous year's finish to determine skipped team for the next year.
Even numbered years: top 2 skip to the right and bottom two skip to the left . . . that is Payton 1 skips Sanders 4, Payton 2 skips Sanders 3, Sanders 1 skips Brown 4, Sanders 2 skips Brown 3, Brown 1 skips Payton 4, Brown 2 skips Payton 3.
Odd numbered years: skip the other direction . . . Payton 1 skips Brown 4 and so on as above, but in the opposite direction.
This process will be spelled out directly and publicly in the Rule Proposals and League Changes Forum under the title "20XX Skipped Teams Thread" by the LM . . . discussion of mistakes can be pointed out there and the schedule corrected. The schedule should be input properly into ESPN by the conclusion of the USFL FA/Rookie draft every year.
Division Shuffling Procedure:
It will take a request by at least two teams to initiate an off-season division shuffle vote. The vote to shuffle the divisions must pass by at least 7-5 (each team gets one vote) and if both of those conditions are met then the divisions will be shuffled. We will debate over shuffling method the first time the vote makes it official. Caveat to the above is . . . the requests and vote and shuffle MUST be completed before the USFL draft begins or it will be put off to the next offseason and will be mandatory after the championship game is completed.
