Well well well... is it too much of a coincidence?
Hurricane Kyle is picking up strength off of the Carolina coast and is scheduled to hit the Maritimes FIVE YEARS TO THE DAY after Hurricane Juan hit Halifax.
Exactly the same time too... late Sunday night. I remember when the power went out at the end of the first half of that Colts-Saints game too. Manning had just thrown his 4th TD of the first half.
After that... no power for an entire week.
Now, I know that neither Hurricane will hit as hard as Katrina. But a hurricane is a hurricane. And Juan was never stronger than a category 2 at any point, and was barely a category 1 when it actually hit Halifax. And we still had a ton of damage.
One thing that you have to know about Halifax, in a lot of neighborhoods close to the downtown area the streets are lined with 100+ year old oak and maple trees. In some areas it's almost like a tunnel because the trees from each side of the street "touch" each other over the top of the street. Aesthetically, it's very nice. But when power lines are running through the middle of those trees, it creates a huge mess if even one tree goes down.
The storm is tracking a little west of me right now... but I just hope that I don't lose power for that long. I hope I don't lose power at all... I love Sunday and Monday night football!

Ya... the good thing about power failures is that it doesn't have an impact on running water. No hot water, but at least there is some water to be had. It's a BIG relief to know that I'll be able to change my bong water if there is an extended power outage!

You want the eye to track EAST of you if possible . . . if the eye doesn't go right over then the next most dangerous part of the storm is the NE quadrants of the storm . . . so if it looks like the eye is tracking west of you look out . . . Ike was a strong category 2 when it hit land in Galveston and the spots that got the hardest hit were Galveston (where the eye came over) and then the Beaumont/Port Arthur area (NE quadrant) . . . B/PA had 20 foot storm surges and recorded winds over 60 mph for 13 straight hours. Good luck . . . stock up on candles and flashlights . . . get you some water to store and clean out the bathtubs and fill them to the brim so that you have a good store of it just in case . . . sometimes city water supplies are compromised by storm surges. Keep your head down!!

Thanks Brad!
Kyle is definitely tracking to the west of me. We'll see I guess. I'm not worried about any possible storm surge, it's the wind that will cause problems. The only thing that the surge would affect is the shops on the downtown waterfront. But aside from that, the water has a pretty steep hill to climb before a surge could cause any flooding, at least in Halifax anyway.

Well... that wasn't too bad. I didn't lose power, but some others did. I think Kyle caught up with another wet system that was lingering on the east coast and spread itself out a bit. Plus, once something like that hits the cooler water that we have it usually loses momentum anyway. It's was still very gusty and it rained quite heavily at times... but nuthin serious. At least where I am. The west coast got it worst than we did. The worst thing that happened this weekend was starting Ryan Fitzpatrick as my only QB. GROSS!!!
