Teams trade away next years draft picks all the time during the NFL draft to get players they want this year. I don't see any problem with doing that. However,I do not think we should be allowed to trade away draft picks for more than one season.(2010 picks ok to trade but not 2011) I am just afraid if we have owners leave the league I don't want the new owners not to have draft picks.

Brad and I are discussing it and we will have a decision made sometime this weekend.

We have already modified this rule prior to the 2009 draft to change the official rules from "eligible to trade when previous draft is over" to "eligible to trade when previous draft begins"
Chris is a proponent of moving back the date to trade the next draft's picks even further. I am ok with that I am also ok with the way it is now. In any case, there will be no trading of next years draft picks (in this year, 2011 draft picks) before the offseason of the previous year begins.
So the question we now have is . . . where in that slot do we allow 20x+1 draft picks to be eligible for trade?
Earliest - first day of offseason before 20x season (day after championship of 20x-1 season concludes)
Latest - Where it is now, beginning of 20x draft.
Discussions?

I don't want to do it right after the Super Bowl, I would perfer to wait a bit. I just think if we wait a couple of weeks we can make sure each owner is coming back and we can find replacements,if needed. I like March 1 for the start of our new season.

I personally don't want to see teams mortgage their future and try to win now and then leave when they don't leaving the new owner with nothing to work with. I don't see why you would want to trade 2011 picks yet anyway.

I like the idea of the next seasons picks being able to be traded right when the upcoming draft starts. Its not really a huge deal if we waited til after the draft is over either, but i like there to be options available as well. If this were a $$ league i could see it being more strict about when picks are available to be traded. Again, i dont think it has much bearing either way, but if i had a preference id go for having the picks for 2011 available at the start of our 2010 draft.

How about this?
A- Future draft picks ( the year after the rookie draft ) are allowed to be traded when the NFL opens free agency.
B- Future draft picks are allowed to be traded once the USFL rookie draft begins.
Those are my two preferences. I'm fine with either, but I like option A the most. I'd prefer to take a little break from trade thoughts after the Superbowl. And I'd prefer to wait until after the combine.

I am thinking 20xx+1 picks should be allowed to be traded, starting on a date prior to our rookie draft initiating for one simple reason--there are times when trade negotiations can take longer than the 8 hour time slot we have to make draft picks, especially when we are all on odd schedules with each other. 99% of the trades made during our draft will involve trying to move up or down in the draft, or trading a player(s) to acquire a pick to target a specific draft prospect, so they typically don't take too long. However, when a team opts to mortgage their future to get...say AD, negotiations could be extended, and for a player of that magnitude, future draft picks may need to come into play and the two parties involved may want a few days to make their decisions.
I think we should set a day-specific date. Options could be the first of a month (March or April), or it could coincide with NFL dates (start of NFL FA/NFL New Year, or the start of the NFL draft).

how about the Monday after the NFL draft concludes? At least then we know where everyone is going barring a late trade.
