Can you explain how the schedule works so we know how to vote. I am assuming 3 divisions means we play our own division mates (2) times each (6 total games), which leaves 7 remaining games. The obvious is we play the other divisions 1 time, which means there will be 1 team each year that we don't play.
In the 2 divisions of 6 how are the games played?
Who decides which team we don't play?
How is the schedule adjusted each year? (It was recently pointed out that so far in the USFL's short existence we already had issues where the schedule was played exactly the same for both years, so IMO this is going to require added commish manipulation which is something to consider in this decision? My experience suggests the less manipulation required the better?
Please elaborate a bit more on each option so we can make an informed decision (vote)...
Thanks!

holy crap Bill! Well Brad already said that he forgot to change the schedule the second year. It was suppose to be you play 3 from the other division one year and the other 3 teams the next. If we do end up with the 2 divisions we would continue to use the same format. As far as who decides who you don't play one year,I can't answer that. Probably just be some sort of random rotation.

I guess what I would suggest the solution be, that you let the site randomly generate a schedule, assuming it has the ability to do that? I have no idea what the choices are for the ESPN site.
As commish of GEDL (My Fantasy League site), that league has 3 divisions of 4 teams. The site offers 21 choices for setting schedules, which I chose play your own division 2 times and 7 others outside division 1 time. Each year I simply hit the button that says "randomly generate schedule", and it does, following the rules of playing your own division opponents 2 times and 7 others outside division 1 time. No thinking, no arguement as to who plays who, each year we reley on the sute to randomly generate.
Again, I could care less which option wins, my preference is with the others so far (3 divisions of 4), I just want to see something set up that is consistent, and easy to reley on each season. So far our experience with ESPN is that it defaults to exactly the same schedule from year to year, which requires commish manipulation.
My question from earlier was just tell us how you plan on doing this league?

I am not sure what you mean.

well since we have the votes can we discuss what the divisons would even look like and how we would figure it out?

well Chris, if you go back to the prior 3 paragraphs of my post, you will see that I am explaining the difficulties of having to manually adjust schedules, and you will see that I have gone into detail on how I have resolved a league which also has 3 divisions of 4 teams so that I was not having to rely on manual adjustments (which are very difficult to do on a regular basis)......The prior post also detailed there were already issues with scheduling that did not happen as planned due to manual adjustments that did not get made as planned, which seemed to validate my point (This was brought up by Gregg and Neil a few months ago)
Thus the question, "How do you plan on doing this league"?
Again, not putting blame on anyone, honestly I'm not. It is very difficult (especially given the # of leagues we are all in together). I just once again want to try and help implement a solution that avoids having to manually adjust schedules....I think Gregg is asking the same thing I am, for the same reason?

Sorry,I would a little confused....its been a long day. I would assume we would just let the ESPN site randomly set the schedule, making sure we play all divisional oppenents twice. As far as setting up the divisions,I am looking at a couple different options.

The whole point of having 3 divisions of 4 teams in a 12 team league is to be able to play teams in your division twice, and every other team once. That would make the playoffs happen in weeks 15 and 16, which would mean only 4 teams make the playoffs--3 divisions winners and 1 wildcard team. That is the only reason to switch to a 3 division format in a 12-team league, a reason that I like. I like to be able to play every team at least once every year, and in order to do that in a 12 team league, the sacrifice to be made is having only 4 teams making the playoffs.
If LM still wants to have a 6 team playoff, no matter what, then there is no reason to switch from the format in place.
I would like 3 divisions with 3 division winners and 1 wildcard team making the playoffs. I will hold off my vote until further elaboration comes from LM.

I have withheld my vote as well . . . I like the idea of everyone playing each other once. Since this is also a pretty competitive league then a lowered number of playoff teams could make it even more prestigious to win this league. At 4 teams 33% of our league would be making the playoffs. In the NFL 12 of 32 teams make the playoffs that's 37.5%, but we would have no byes. The other question is how do people feel about doubleheader weeks? It would be on non-division games only and I don't even know if ESPN allows that functionality.

I wouldn't mind a doubleheader week. I would like to see at least 5 teams make the playoffs. I think having the doubleheader week(s) early in the season would be best. Ideally, that is when most teams would be at the most healthy and there would be no bye weeks in the NFL season yet.

Bill . . . if we go with 7 out of division games then there will be a set procedure every year to determine the randomly not played team.
The best one I can think of right now is to randomly take one division (roll a six sided die with two numbers assigned to each division) and go from top to bottom (by previous years ranking) rolling an 8 sided die and assigning teams that will not play each other. Once two teams from one division are randomly rolled then the other teams from that division are automatically disqualified (or we would get in-division skips) and coin flips will be used to determine opponents not played. The entire procedure will be lined out step by step determining who you do not play in a thread on the message board. The next year we go through the same process except that the team you didn't play last year must be on your schedule this year. That's the procedure as I envision it anyways. You will play every team every two years at a minimum, however the randomness could allow you play a certain team only once in three years and in an extreme case of luck only twice in 5 years.
